When discussions about artificial intelligence in cybersecurity arise, a common concern emerges: “If AI can identify patterns faster than I can, will it still need me?”

This question is valid and highlights a deeper anxiety regarding the future of security jobs. AI is increasingly integrated into various systems, including email gateways, security operations center workflows, identity management, and cloud defenses. However, the reality is that AI is not eliminating security roles; it is transforming them.

The real danger lies not in replacement but in being unprepared. Many organizations struggle to equip their personnel to work effectively with AI. Research indicates that 40% of workers find it challenging to incorporate AI into their roles, while 75% lack confidence in utilizing it.

From my perspective as a Chief Information Officer, the pertinent question is not, “Will AI replace my team?” Instead, it is, “How can I ensure that humans remain at the heart of AI-driven security?”

AI's Impact on Cybersecurity Operations

AI is more than just a buzzword; it is actively changing the way security teams function. Analysts now utilize tools that feature built-in agents and AI assistants, which assist in tasks such as extracting signals from diverse data sources, consolidating related alerts, and summarizing lengthy tickets. This allows teams across different regions to view incidents with a consistent context and speed.

In essence, AI provides a level of scale and speed that humans alone cannot achieve. However, the critical decisions still rest with people.

This transition redefines the division of labor between humans and machines, enhancing the importance of human judgment. AI should manage repetitive and time-consuming tasks, allowing individuals to concentrate on strategic, higher-value work. Achieving this requires a commitment to governance, literacy, and collaboration.

Establishing Governance for Data Protection and Innovation

AI relies heavily on data, which is one of the most valuable assets that any security team must safeguard. Therefore, strong governance is essential. Organizations should form a cross-functional AI council that includes leaders from legal, compliance, security, and business sectors. This council should meet regularly with a clear purpose:

  1. Assess AI projects
  2. Keep track of emerging regulations
  3. Adapt controls as risks change

Every decision should be guided by two fundamental principles:

1. Protect the data.

It is crucial to monitor or restrict sensitive data flows to AI tools, including security telemetry, customer information, and intellectual property. The safeguards must be robust enough to prevent leaks without hindering essential operations.

2. Enable innovation.

Excessively strict controls can hinder legitimate experimentation by product and engineering teams. Governance should strike a balance between establishing clear boundaries and empowering authorized personnel to safely explore the potential of AI.

Enhancing AI Literacy Throughout the Organization

An effective AI strategy will falter if employees are hesitant to adopt the tools or lack the necessary skills to use them properly.

Research suggests that rapid technological advancements, evolving work models, and new AI-driven priorities will compel organizations to adapt. Concurrently, employees must acquire new skills to keep pace. While many people are aware of AI from the news and may use chatbots in their personal lives, they often lack understanding regarding its relevance to their professional roles and the best security practices to follow.

Organizations should implement AI training programs tailored to their employees across all functions. Most staff members can utilize AI chat for everyday tasks, while a select group, with additional training and clear guidelines, can develop agents. It is important to customize the training paths based on varying levels of comfort and responsibility, rather than requiring non-technical employees to complete the same course as engineers.

In addition to boosting productivity, this approach is essential for strengthening the organization’s security posture. Employees who understand AI are able to ask informed questions. They recognize which data they can share and which data they must keep confidential.

Involving Employees in Designing AI-Enabled Workflows

AI in security is most effective when frontline teams contribute to how it integrates into their daily work.

Companies should develop an AI roadmap specific to their functions and designate AI champions within their organizations. These champions possess both business and technical knowledge and are eager to explore new working methods. They can help identify use cases and guide colleagues through initial experiments.

Hackathons have proven particularly effective. Rather than restricting participation to engineers, it is beneficial to include individuals from finance, human resources, and other departments. Participants can utilize internal AI tools to address everyday challenges, such as analyzing exit surveys or enhancing internal processes. Hackathons can also focus on quicker alert triage, improved incident documentation, or smarter analysis of phishing reports. When analysts and responders are involved in designing these workflows, they tend to trust the outputs more and are more likely to apply the tools in real incidents.

It is crucial to understand the distinction between automation and augmentation. Automation replaces a task, while augmentation empowers analysts to accomplish things they could not do previously, such as examining an entire attack path across multiple systems in mere seconds.

Prioritizing Human Involvement

AI is fundamentally altering how security professionals operate, and they are seeking alignment and opportunities for skill enhancement. Security leaders must establish governance that protects essential data while fostering innovation. Organizations should also provide employees with the necessary training to use AI safely and confidently, involving them in the design process to ensure that AI-enabled workflows align with actual work practices.

By adopting this approach, AI can become a powerful force multiplier. It can manage the heavy lifting, allowing teams to bring their judgment, creativity, and leadership to every decision they make.
