The ongoing negotiations between Anthropic and the Pentagon have intensified interest in the company's AI system, Claude.
Discussions between the Department of Defense and Anthropic recently fell through after the deadline for an agreement passed without a resolution. The Pentagon had urged Anthropic to relax certain restrictions on the usage of its AI technology. However, Anthropic chose to maintain its existing policy limits.
In the aftermath of the failed negotiations, the Pentagon classified Anthropic as a supply chain risk, which will restrict future contracting and procurement opportunities with the company.
Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, stated, “Anthropic understands that the Department of War, not private companies, makes military decisions. We have never raised objections to particular military operations nor attempted to limit the use of our technology in an ad hoc manner.”
He continued, “However, in a narrow set of cases, we believe AI can undermine, rather than defend, democratic values. Some uses are also simply outside the bounds of what today’s technology can safely and reliably do. Two such use cases have never been included in our contracts with the Department of War, and we believe they should not be included now.”
Shortly after Anthropic's exclusion, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, announced that his company had secured a contract with the Pentagon to provide AI for classified military systems. OpenAI's acceptance of demands that Anthropic had rejected faced public criticism, prompting the company to revise certain contract provisions.
New Memory Import Tool Eases Migration
Despite the controversy, Anthropic seems to be thriving. Users have been transitioning to Claude in significant numbers, causing the app to rise in the rankings of free applications in the U.S. App Store. This surge in users likely contributed to an outage experienced on March 2.
In an effort to attract users from competing chatbots, Anthropic has promoted a feature that enables users to transfer conversation history and preferences from platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot to Claude.
This memory import feature is accessible across all Claude plans, including Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise, on both web and desktop versions.
To facilitate the migration process, Anthropic has developed a dedicated prompt that allows users to gather relevant context from other AI assistants within a single conversation.
After collecting the necessary information, users can paste the exported output into Claude’s memory import tool. The company assures users, “Once the import is complete, you’ll see your updated memory within 24 hours.”
