This Cookie Policy explains how Scalar Digital Services LLC ("Company," "we," "us," or "our"), publisher of Unsurfaced, uses cookies and similar technologies to recognize you when you visit our website at https://unsurfaced.com (the "Services"). It explains what these technologies are and why we use them, as well as your rights to control our use of them.

This Cookie Policy should be read together with our Privacy Policy: https://unsurfaced.com/privacy.

1. WHAT ARE COOKIES?

Cookies are small data files that are placed on your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies are widely used by website owners in order to make their websites work, or to work more efficiently, as well as to provide reporting information.

Cookies set by the website owner (in this case, us) are called "first-party cookies." Cookies set by parties other than the website owner are called "third-party cookies." Third-party cookies enable third-party features or functionality to be provided on or through the website (for example, analytics, advertising, and affiliate attribution). The parties that set these third-party cookies can recognize your device both when it visits the website in question and also when it visits certain other websites.

2. WHY DO WE USE COOKIES?

We use first-party and third-party cookies for several reasons. Some cookies are required for technical reasons in order for our Services to operate, and we refer to these as "essential" cookies. Other cookies enable us to understand how visitors use the Services, to display and measure advertising, and to track whether a click on an advertisement or affiliate link led to a sign-up or purchase with one of our partners so that commissions or referral fees can be calculated.

3. WHAT TYPES OF COOKIES DO WE USE?

Essential cookies. These cookies are strictly necessary to provide you with the Services and to enable basic site functions, such as maintaining a session and remembering your preferences. Because they are necessary for the Services to work, they cannot be refused through the controls below, though you can block or delete them by changing your browser settings.

Analytics cookies. These cookies collect information that is used in aggregate form to help us understand how our Services are being used and how effective our content is. We use Google Analytics for this purpose. To opt out of being tracked by Google Analytics across websites, visit https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.

Advertising cookies. These cookies are used to make advertising messages more relevant to you and to measure the performance of advertising campaigns. We use Google Ads, which uses cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to our Services or other websites, measure ad performance, and provide conversion tracking and remarketing. You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google's Ads Settings at https://adssettings.google.com.

Affiliate and referral cookies. Some links on the Services are affiliate links to products or services offered by independent third-party providers (for example, antivirus and security software vendors featured in our "Best Antivirus" guide, such as TotalAV). When you click such a link, we or our partners may set cookies or pass tracking parameters (such as an affiliate ID or campaign tag) so that the partner can recognize that your visit originated from Unsurfaced. These technologies are used to measure whether a click led to a sign-up or purchase, to detect and prevent invalid traffic or fraud, and to calculate commissions or referral fees. They do not increase the price you pay for any product or service. For more information, see the "AFFILIATE COMPENSATION AND PARTNER SERVICES" section of our Terms of Service: https://unsurfaced.com/terms.

Tag management. We use Google Tag Manager, a tag management system provided by Google, to load and manage tracking tags and pixels on our Services. Google Tag Manager itself does not collect personal information, but it enables the deployment of the other tracking technologies described in this Cookie Policy.

4. HOW LONG DO COOKIES STAY ON MY DEVICE?

The length of time a cookie remains on your device depends on whether it is a "session" or "persistent" cookie. Session cookies last until you stop browsing, at which point they are deleted. Persistent cookies last until they expire or are deleted; the expiration period is set by the party that placed the cookie and varies by cookie.

5. WHAT ABOUT OTHER TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES?

Cookies are not the only way to recognize or track visitors to a website. We and our partners may use other, similar technologies from time to time, like web beacons (sometimes called "tracking pixels" or "clear gifs") and tracking parameters appended to links. These are tiny graphics files or URL components that contain a unique identifier that enable us or our partners to recognize when someone has visited our Services, clicked an advertisement or affiliate link, or completed a sign-up or purchase on a partner site. In many instances, these technologies are reliant on cookies to function properly, so declining cookies will impair their functioning.

6. HOW CAN YOU CONTROL COOKIES?

You have the right to decide whether to accept or reject cookies (other than essential cookies).

Consent banner. When you first visit the site, a consent prompt lets you accept all cookies, reject non-essential ones, or manage the analytics and advertising categories individually. You can change your choice at any time by clicking "Cookie Settings" in the footer of any page.

Browser controls. Most web browsers are set to accept cookies by default. If you prefer, you can usually set your browser to remove or reject cookies. The controls are typically found in your browser's "Settings" or "Preferences" menu under privacy or security options. If you choose to remove or reject cookies, this could affect certain features of our Services.

Google opt-outs. You can opt out of Google Analytics at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout and manage personalized advertising from Google at https://adssettings.google.com. For more information on the privacy practices of Google, please visit https://policies.google.com/privacy.

Industry opt-outs. You can opt out of interest-based advertising served by participating third parties by visiting http://optout.aboutads.info (Digital Advertising Alliance) or http://optout.networkadvertising.org (Network Advertising Initiative).

US state privacy rights. To the extent online tracking technologies are deemed to be a "sale"/"sharing" (which includes targeted advertising, as defined under applicable US state laws), you can opt out by submitting a request as described in the section "DO UNITED STATES RESIDENTS HAVE SPECIFIC PRIVACY RIGHTS?" of our Privacy Policy: https://unsurfaced.com/privacy.

7. DO-NOT-TRACK

Most web browsers include a Do-Not-Track ("DNT") feature or setting you can activate to signal your privacy preference not to have data about your online browsing activities monitored and collected. At this stage, no uniform technology standard for recognizing and implementing DNT signals has been finalized. As such, we do not currently respond to DNT browser signals or any other mechanism that automatically communicates your choice not to be tracked online.

8. DO WE MAKE UPDATES TO THIS COOKIE POLICY?

We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time in order to reflect, for example, changes to the cookies we use or for other operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this Cookie Policy. Please revisit this Cookie Policy regularly to stay informed about our use of cookies and related technologies.
