The Mob Museum has launched a timely new exhibit titled "Digital Underworld", which delves into the rise of cybercrime as a significant frontier of organized crime. This development is highlighted in a new video released on the acclaimed Cybercrime Magazine YouTube channel.
This exhibit chronicles the evolution of cybercrime, beginning with mischievous hackers experimenting in the 1970s and ’80s, and moving to the sophisticated ransomware organizations of today that steal millions of dollars every day. It emphasizes the growing threat posed to anyone with an internet-connected device.
One of the exhibit's central features is a live cyberthreat map, developed by Check Point Software Technologies, a leader in cybersecurity solutions. This display provides real-time updates on cyberattacks happening worldwide, offering visitors a striking visualization of the scale and persistence of contemporary threats.
A large wall mural and a dedicated panel on ransomware illustrate how these criminal enterprises operate similarly to high-tech startups. The exhibit highlights the staggering costs associated with ransomware, which amount to an estimated $156 million lost every day, according to Cybersecurity Ventures.
"Digital Underworld" is situated in the Museum’s Organized Crime Today gallery on the first floor.
