Meta AI in WhatsApp structures chats, raises privacy concerns

The trend of incorporating artificial intelligence into digital platforms continues to evolve. In its latest Android beta release (2.26.9.4), WhatsApp has introduced a feature that enables users to organize their chat history with the assistance of Meta AI.

New Features for Beta Testers

Some beta testers now have access to a feature that allows them to review their conversations with Meta AI. Each time a user sends a prompt, the AI chatbot initiates a separate thread of conversation. The information exchanged within that thread helps the AI understand context and respond to future messages.

Despite this separation of conversations, all messages with Meta AI are presented within a unified interface, even if they belong to different threads.

“With the latest update, WhatsApp is making it easier for users to track information shared in specific conversations with Meta AI. Each conversation is now treated as a separate thread, so information from one chat is not automatically carried over to another. However, memory is still shared across all AI threads unless users choose to disable it from the contact info screen,” stated WABetaInfo.

Privacy Concerns Arise

This new feature may attract users who appreciate AI-assisted organization, but it also raises significant questions about data handling and privacy. Messages sent to Meta AI are processed on the company's servers to generate responses and maintain context, which deviates from WhatsApp’s standard end-to-end encryption model for user-to-user communication.

Users could potentially disclose sensitive information, such as health, financial, or personal data, without being fully aware of how long this data is stored or how it may be utilized. This situation raises privacy concerns, particularly in the European Union, where regulators have indicated that certain forms of AI data processing may need explicit user consent.

Meta has faced criticism regarding its AI training practices in the past. According to a company blog post, the AI feature allows Meta to tailor content and advertising based on users’ interactions with its generative AI tools. Notably, there is no option to opt-out of this data usage, affecting anyone who engages with Meta AI across platforms like Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Messenger.

Meta claims it is making considerable efforts to protect user privacy, but the effectiveness of these safeguards over time remains to be seen.
